write a work dedicated to the Holocaust. After my immigration to Israel I started to consider different ideas for such a work. At first, I wanted to write a requiem for the standard orchestration: soloists, choir, orchestra and, maybe, narrator. At that time,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.music.msu.edu\/faculty\/profile\/yuri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yuri Gandelsman<\/a>, the principal violist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, asked me to write something for him. He was an excellent violist whom I had known for years &#8211; we learned at the same time at Gnessin College and then at Gnessin Institute (Academy of Music). So, when he asked me to write for him a work for viola and symphony orchestra, I suddenly understood &#8211; I would write a requiem for viola and symphony orchestra! It took me about two years to write it, during which I felt that he was waiting for me to complete it. The day after I finished writing <em>Requiem<\/em>, <em>my father passed away<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-id=\"ebe1dc5\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ebe1dc5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default elementor-section elementor-top-section\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div data-id=\"c154e15\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c154e15 elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t<div data-id=\"c760444\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c760444 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-element_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>In the end, Yuri Gandelsman did not perform <em>Requiem<\/em>.<br \/>In October 1995, less than a year after it&#8217;s composition, <em>Requiem<\/em> received the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/acum.org.il\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACUM<\/a> (Israeli ASCAP)\u00a0award.<\/p><p>The world premiere of <em>Requiem<\/em> took place in October 2001, at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pigovat.com\/wordpress\/babyi_yar_memorial_2001\/\">memorial evening dedicated to Babi Yar tragedy<\/a>, in Kiev, by remarkable violist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.genuit.de\/Genuit\/Partner\/p_Rainer_Moog.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rainer Moog<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.filarmonia.com.ua\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Symphony Orchestra of National Philarmonic Society of Ukraine<\/a>, conducted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Kofman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roman Kofman<\/a>.<\/p><p><em>Requiem<\/em> was performed again seven years later at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pigovat.com\/wordpress\/requiem_kristallnacht_2008\/\">Concert of Remembrance for the 70th Anniversary of Kristallnacht<\/a>, at an outstanding performance by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victoria.ac.nz\/nzsm\/about\/staff\/donald-maurice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Maurice<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orchestrawellington.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vector Wellington Orchestra<\/a> in New Zealand, conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/marctaddei.com\/bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Taddei<\/a>.
