Suddenly, I realized that I was actually composing a tone poem,\u00a0evoking scenes of a small Jewish town at the beginning of the 20th century. Such images and moods typify novels by Shalom Aleichem and the earlier paintings by Marc Chagall. I felt <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a particularly strong association <\/span> to Chagall&#8217;s pictures. For this reason, I named the piece <em>Dedicated to Marc Chagall<\/em>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in addition to the secondary title of\u00a0<\/span><em>Jewish Rhapsody &#8220;Hava Nagila&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p><p>I composed the piece in 2003, for wind orchestra, and then for string orchestra (with optional piano). The main part of both versions is similar, but\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the nature of strings required a completely different\u00a0<\/span>introduction for the string version.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-id=\"6818161\" elementor-clearfix\"><p>Later, both versions were performed many times in Israel and around the world.<br \/>In 2015, the wind-orchestra version was also performed at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasbe.org\/conference-details.php?id=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WASBE Conference in San Jose<\/a>, California, by the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.nli.org.il\/sites\/NLI\/English\/music\/news\/Pages\/Band.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel Youth Wind Orchestra<\/a>, conducted by Motti Miron. Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t have a recording of that performance.
