The first movement depicts a <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yemenite desert\u00a0<\/span>landscape. The second movement depicts\u00a0 the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yemenite <\/span> folk celebration.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept was suggested to me by<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pigovat.com\/wordpress\/michael-delman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Delman<\/a>.<br \/>The task was very challenging\u00a0 for me,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this was my first introduction to\u00a0<\/span>Yemenite Jewish folklore.<\/p><p>When I was a young composer, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 1980s, Professor\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cultureru.com\/yuri-alexandrovich-fortunatov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yuri Alexandrovich Fortunatov<\/a> gave me some advice:<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-id=\"69983a7\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-69983a7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default elementor-section elementor-top-section\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div data-id=\"85d9e9e\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-85d9e9e elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t<div data-id=\"f0deab2\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0deab2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-element_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">If you need to compose a piece for\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folklore that is<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i> completely foreign to you, first you must &#8220;sink&#8221; into it. Only when you feel that you own the style, like it is in your blood beneath the skin, are you ready to compose\u2026<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-id=\"ebe1dc5\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ebe1dc5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default elementor-section elementor-top-section\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div elementor-clearfix\"><p>Following that advice, I spent almost three months listening to a\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive quantity<\/span>\u00a0of audio recordings from <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yemenite Jewish folk music<\/span>, until I <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was able to internalize the unique <\/span> feel of its melodic and rhythmic patterns.<\/p><p>In 2000, I completed the <em>Wind of Yemen<\/em>, and it was premiered\u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pigovat.com\/wordpress\/michael-delman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Delman<\/a>\u00a0and the Petach-Tikva Conservatoire Symphonic Band.<\/p><p><em>Wind of Yemen<\/em>\u00a0was\u00a0performed at the Asian Music Festival 2003 (in Tokyo) by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkwo.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kosei Wind Orchestra<\/a>, conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.douglasbostock.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Douglas Bostock<\/a>.<\/p><p>In 2009, it was performed at the WASBE conference\u00a0by CAM B\u00e9tera, conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/alarconmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luis Serrano<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Alarc\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p><p>In 2010, it was performed in <a href=\"http:\/\/pigovat.com\/wordpress\/mano-a-mano-2010\/\">Mano a Mano festival<\/a>, Bunol, Spain, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cimarmonica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIM La Arm\u00f3nica de Bu\u00f1ol (Valencia)<\/a>, conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankdevuyst.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank De Vuyst<\/a>.<br \/>That same year,\u00a0<em>Wind of Yemen<\/em> was published in Spain by <a href=\"http:\/\/pilesmusic.net\/tienda\/list-all-products\/?keyword=wind%20of%20yemen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piles Editorial de Musica.<\/a><\/p><p>In 2015, it was performed\u00a0 at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasbe.org\/conference-details.php?id=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WASBE conference<\/a>\u00a0(<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in San Jose, California, USA)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.nli.org.il\/sites\/NLI\/English\/music\/news\/Pages\/Band.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Youth Symphonic Band of Israel<\/a>, conducted by Motti Miron.<\/p><p>In 2018, it was performed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sgbandfest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Singapore International Band Festival<\/a>, by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.orchestracollective.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orchestra Collective of Singapore<\/a>, conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orchestra.sg\/associate-conductor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yibin Seow<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-id=\"2d47293\"
