I composed Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano in 2024, dedicating it to the outstanding violist Peter Minkler, who delivered a magnificent performance of the American premiere of my Holocaust Requiem for Viola and Symphony Orchestra in 2023.
The Sonata consists of two movements:
Grave, misterioso: The music of the first movement is profoundly somber and tragic, written under the emotional weight of the devastating events of October 7, 2023.
Tranquillo, chiaro: Following such a dramatic opening, I felt a compelling need to create “music of consolation, light, and hope.” This inner impulse shaped the character of the second movement.
The world premiere of the Sonata took place in March 2026 in Baltimore, USA, performed by Peter Minkler (viola) and Wan-Chi Su (piano).
